My name is Kevin Brandt. I’m 31, I live in downtown Brantford, I work full-time as an optometric technician in town, and I volunteer in my community. I studied Political Science at York University, and graduated with honours. I’m a single dad – my four year old son is my world and my motivation. Politics is my passion. I love my country, but I’m not too fond of its government. I also love Brantford. I moved here a few years ago from Toronto, and I quickly became enamoured by its amazing people and beautiful natural environment. I joined Brantford’s Environmental Policy Advisory Committee shortly after moving here, and was elected Chair of the committee at my very first meeting, which I served as for two years. This rewarding role gave me experience with Brantford’s political system. Since then, I’ve joined another local group which cleans up the litter found in various parts of the city.
I’m running for City Council in Ward 5 for several reasons: firstly, because I’m a father. I often ask myself, “What kind of world do I want to leave behind for my son? What kind of role model do I want to be?” Second, because as a politically aware individual, I realize that there is a growing crisis of leadership in politics. Corruption runs rampant, and there seems to be a lack of credible alternatives in political leadership. Thirdly, my concept of what it means to be a citizen is very Athenian in nature. I view democratic participation not simply as a right, but as a duty. I choose to run for public office, rather than merely observe and vote, because I believe that I can make a positive difference in Brantford.
I am not running as a partisan politician – I am not affiliated with any political party, because I simply don’t relate to any of them. I’m running as an individual who believes in his ideas, who cares about his community, and who is willing to listen to different worldviews. I am running in order to provide intelligent, focused, and strong leadership for the people of Brantford. It's time for new thinking and better ideas.
