Larry Wagg
WAGG, Larry Norman Born Redwing, ON, November 18, 1926 Died Ottawa, ON, April 10, 2010 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Larry Norman Wagg announces his passing. For almost sixty-one years, Larry was the beloved husband of Marilyn June Elgar. Cherished father of David Wagg of Saskatoon, SK and Brenda Lynn Wagg of Burnaby, B.C. and dear father-in-law of Lois McKenzie. He was the respected grandfather of Matthew Stuart and Travis Wagg and his wife Crystal. Larry was the son of John Norman Wagg and Islay Mae Hutchison and was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald and Maurice. Larry began his working life as a printer's apprentice at the Guelph Daily Mercury and after earning his Journeyman status he moved to the Brantford Expositor. While in Brantford, Larry was president of his local union, I.T.U. #378 and of the Brantford Trades & Labour Council and was active in the political scene at all levels. In 1962 he was a member of the Duke of Edinburgh's Study Conference across Canada and later that same year he joined the staff of the Canadian Labour Congress, first as Assistant Director of Education, Ontario region; then Director of Education, Prairie region, based in Regina, SK; Director of Education, Ontario region, in Toronto and finally moving to Ottawa in 1974 as National Director of Education. From 1981-86 Larry was the Labour Counsellor to Great Britain and Sweden, serving at the Canadian High Commission in London, England and making frequent trips to Sweden. Larry returned to the C.L.C. in 1986 until his retirement, following which he was an active member of the Friends of the Experimental Farm working as a volunteer in the arboretum and also helping in the establishment of the present hosta gardens there. Larry was the guiding force behind the founding of the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada, acting first as its vice-president and then as president, working faithfully in the interests of Canadian union pensioners. Larry was a proud union man all of his life and an active member of the CCF/NDP. He will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues across Canada as well as abroad and especially by his golfing buddies, "The Thursday Thrashers", Fred, Bob, Kevin and Emile. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor), Ottawa, on Wednesday, April 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Service to Celebrate his Life will be held in the Chapel on Thursday, April 15 at 1 pm. In memory of Larry, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Friends of the Experimental Farm or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
